Photo Kano is based on a Japanese dating sim game that was released for the PlayStation Portable.

The main character of Photo Kano is Kazuya Maeda, a second-year high school student. He's rather unremarkable, and there's nothing to make him stand out... until his father gives him a hand me down camera that he takes to school with him.

A couple of the girls that Kazuya is friends with want to have their picture taken. He also spends time going around campus on breaks, finding things and people to photograph. He is followed by Hiromichi Kudo, the president of the Photography Club. Hiromichi likes what he sees, and invites Kazuya to join.

At the club room, Kazuya learns that Hiromichi and the other club members focus on taking pictures of the female students going about their daily lives, as well as borderline eroticism pictures. Next door is the Photo Club, which takes all of the official school photos; the club was founded by Katsumi Kurebayashi to be an alternative to the Photography Club. After being courted by both clubs, Kazuya decides to go with the Photography Club.

It's very clear in the first episode that Photo Kano is based on a dating sim, between the feel of the overall series and the introduction of the various characters. And the aspect of the "borderline eroticism" in the photography is made clear in the opening credits with the various "fanservice" shots that are included.

By the end of the first episode, an attempt is made to add another layer to story after Kazuya joins the Photography Club. However, only a small hint is dropped right at the end of the episode, with the expectation that this will be enough to make the viewer want to watch the next episode to find out what the hint is leading to. For me, there just wasn't enough to this series to make me rush out and watch more of it.

It's not that Photo Kano is a bad series, it's just that I'm not in the target audience for it. For the type of show that Photo Kano is, it seems to be off to a good start. However, Photo Kano is a series that will probably be best enjoyed by fans of the dating sim, by anime viewers who enjoy watching series based on dating sims, and by anime viewers who like having "fanservice" elements in the anime that they watch.

Due to the premise and the visuals of the series, I would personally recommend Photo Kano to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
