The Hawkeyes from the University of Iowa in Iowa City have varsity teams in 24 sports including men’s baseball and hockey. Five of the baseball team members and one hockey player were recently renting a house not far from the university at 508 North Dubuque Street.

Trevor Kenyon, a junior catcher; Aaron Smit, a junior pitcher; Taylor Zeutenhorst, first baseman Brian Niedbalski and their other two Hawkeyes roommates lived in the large eight bedroom, 3 bathroom, 2 kitchen house for a couple of years.

According to Aaron Smit, they have noticed over the past few months “things getting a little bit weird. We had a kid in here who thought he saw a ghost – a shadow in the form of a human.”

That remark from their visitor got the fellows to thinking about some other events that might not be considered “normal” such as Zeutenhorst saying “he saw a little girl in his bedroom.”

The residents of the house heard a door slam and someone racing up the stairs one morning, but everyone was in bed. They have noticed kitchen chairs changing positions late at night.

Smit said that “girlfriends of players have had underwear removed from them while sleeping.” The girls “were wearing pants.” The items were found “in another place.”

The most negative experience that occurred took place in the furnished attic where Kenyon was living. This energetic young man at times found himself unable to get out of bed. He felt exhausted and depressed. Kenyon talked with other teammates who had lived in the attic of the home in the past and they indicated that they had experienced similar feelings of exhaustion while they stayed there.

A former tenant showed up at the house one day. He was a middle-aged man who just wanted to check out his old abode. He told the young men that in the 1920s, the building had been used as a funeral home.
After the experiences continued to occur, the roommates decided to call in an expert to “confirm or deny the presence of a ghost or otherworldly spirits in their home.”

Kenyon found the Paranormal Activity Support Team by their facebook page and the four ladies came in to check out the activity.

From their investigation, the paranormal group found two entities residing in the house: “an older, grandfather-like gentleman and a little girl around the age of 10, but they were not related.”

Sandy Marler, a member of the paranormal group, advised Kenyon to ask the older spirit “to stop stealing his energy.”

Paranormal entities often draw energy from many sources including humans in order to manifest themselves or communicate with the living. Although, this can sometimes have a negative effect on people, the spirits don’t usually mean any harm.

After Kenyon requested that the draining of his energy cease, he has been fine. He no longer sleeps the entire morning and half the afternoon away, and is up early every morning.

Although Paranormal Activity Support Team determined that the spirits in the house are harmless, the Hawkeyes baseball players did not renew their lease. Of course, they also didn’t try to encourage the spirits to move on or go away. Those entities are undoubtedly still residing at 508 North Dubuque Street…and it’s been rented to another group.
