Teaching Your Daughter To Be Caring
Having your daughter place high value on helping other people is what caring is all about. What If you could teach your daughter a creative way to care more? It would encourage her to care about herself more and in turn care for others better. She could then learn the skill it takes to make a difference in the world.
Compassion, kindness and caring starts right at home with you the parent. Look for different ways you can go out of your way for someone in need and your daughter will take notice in the same way. If your habit will be to – walk on by – then your daughter will too.
Volunteering can be considered a labor of love. Simply because it’s more of a physical form of work without the pay! Another way of looking at this would be - teaching the value of service to others. Find a meaningful way for your family to volunteer to help others. You could visit people in the hospital or seniors homes. You can truly exercise your labor of love by assisting at your local recreation center or soup kitchen.
If you have a teen daughter, have her use her skills. The soup kitchen could use her assistance with the web or computer activity, if she is an athlete she could assist with coaching little league, and if music is her skill she could play tunes during visitations. Encouraging your daughter to help others while doing what she enjoys is priceless! At the same time you as the parent will be further developing a life skill - the skill of caring.
Another way to encourage caring is to show empathy or compassion. When you see news stories about natural disasters or tragedies – ask your family what you can do as a family to help the situation. Maybe you can purchase water and deliver it to a drop-off collection center. By expressing concern for others in various ways, you can set a positive example for your daughter. That would be letting her know the importance of caring for others.
Raising a caring daughter is something that requires a caring lifestyle. Start thinking today about how you can make any changes in yourself to be more caring. It will encourage your daughter to do the same. You are your daughter’s most influential teacher.
You can give joy, hope and even love but I think that the gift of caring is the greatest gift you can give to your daughter.
