Japanese Taupe Quilt Blocks
Taupe is considered the new black these days – especially in quilting circles. The definition for taupe in the Encarta Dictionary, English (UK) edition is “a dark brownish-grey colour”. Not a very stirring definition I’ll grant you, but if you’re looking for a colour to enhance all colours around it, you can’t do much better than taupe.
Susa Briscoe is a quilter of renown, who also understands the wonderful gift the colour taupe gives to our quilting palettes. Susan has recognised that the hue of taupe is found throughout the Japanese countryside and culture and together with her passion for Japanese quilting designs, Susan has put together another wonderful quilt publication titled Japanese Taupe Quilt Blocks, Calm, Neutral Collection. This book is the brother of her other Japanese Quilt Block book.
Again, the book brings a unique slant on the enormous availability of beautiful Japanese Quilt blocks, but using the delightful tints, tones and shades that make up the spectrum of taupe hues. Susan has carefully organised the blocks into techniques to make easy selection. Techniques such as Patchwork piecing, appliqué (needle turning) and combining these two techniques is also addressed.
Like Susan’s previous publication, Japanese Quilt Blocks to Mix and Match, the publication itself is on very quality paper stock, and the size and shape is a little different than most quilt books that will be found on quilter’s library shelves. I like the shape of this book. It’s easy to handle and sits flat when opened.
One of the highlights of this book is that the appliqué patterns are all included in the back of the book. The graphics for these patterns are exceptional, and it is obvious to see that a great deal of care and attention has been put into the displaying of these templates. Quilters really appreciate it when they know they can trust the veracity of templates, believe me!
I enjoy just flipping through this quilt book, especially when I haven’t the time to quilt. It sates my need for design creativity and need for quilt eye candy. This book would make a delightful gift for any quilter and I thoroughly recommend you purchase the pigeon pair – Japanese Taupe Quilt Blocks and Japanese Quilt Blocks by Susan Briscoe.
