Girls und Panzer

Girls und Panzer
Girls und Panzer (which is known in Japan as Garuzu ando Pantsa) is anime series created and produced by Actas.

Two concepts can easily describe this series: high school girls and tanks. Girls und Panzer is set in a world where the operation of tanks is considered a traditional martial art for girls.

Miho Nishizumi, the protagonist of the series, comes from a family that is known for their skills in Tankery; unfortunately, Miho is not as talented in this as her mother or her sister. Miho has transferred to Oarai Girl's High School, because they specifically didn't have a Tankery class. She makes friends with two of her classmates, Saori Takebe and Hana Isuzu.

On her first day, Miho is approached by the student body president and her two cronies. It turns out that Tankery is being reinstated at the school, and they are trying very hard to convince Miho to choose Tankery as her mandatory elective, due to her family's reputation. When she doesn't sign up, the student council president calls her to the office and says that Miho has to sign up for Tankery, or she and her new friends will be forced to leave the school. Miho, along with Saori and Hana, end up taking Tankery.

I have to say that by the time I finished watching the first episode, I wasn't terribly invested in either the characters or the story. In fact, I was rather bored by the episode as I watched it, because it didn't seem like there was much happening. Perhaps the pacing will be better in future episodes.

The animation tries to combine traditional animation with computer graphics. The effectiveness of the computer graphics is rather mixed. In some instances, it works and enhances some of the backgrounds. However, when the computer graphics are used for the tanks seen in the opening scene of the first episode, the computer graphics stand out a little too much.

I think this anime will have appeal to viewers who enjoy series set in high school and feature characters working toward a common goal. By the time I finished watching the first episode, I wasn;t hooked and wanting to watch more of the series through online streaming. However, at such a point that Girls und Panzer gets a home video release, I'd be willing to get a DVD release through the library in order to see how the series continues.

As I watched the first episode, I really didn't see anything objectionable in the visuals for younger viewers. Personally, I would recommend Girls und Panzer to anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
