Passion-Have You Found Yours?

Passion-Have You Found Yours?
We often hear that we must be passionate about our work or we’re just robots moving about in the world. Before I started my beauty business, I use to always hear: “you must have a passion for what you do in business or it will never succeed.” Truth be told, my passion has always been apparel. I love the beauty of the natural fabrics. Two things made me change my course. One - the natural fabrics were replaced with polyester, rayon and other synthetic blends. Not all fabrics, however, in order to wear the beautiful natural fabrics, your had to pay three times more than before.

What I really didn’t like was the fact that the synthetic fabrics were now commanding the prices that natural fabrics used to cost. I did’t like what was coming to market, so I lost my desire for years to purchase clothes. I could no longer sell pieces that I didn’t like. So for my personal pieces, I became a boutique shopper, only making purchases that I loved and had a uniqueness in design, color and/or texture.

The second thing that changed my course was the fact that I was maturing and my skin was changing. I’d never been one to wear a lot of make up or have a skin care regimen. After 35 years in the apparel industry, I was about to embark on a new path. Was it my passion? No at all.

It was time to make a change

I felt the need to replace my passion for apparel with something new. So I moved to the beauty side of the aisle. This was a scary decision. Honestly, I didn’t like feeling like an artificial person and this is what wearing make up made me feel like. And forget about what the ingredients did to my skin. I decided to go to school and study esthetics. This was completely out of my comfort zone. What I learned is that there were lots and lots of ethnic beauties that had the same challenges I had.

I wanted to help as many of you as I could. Just knowing that there were other women of color that needed help with a good skin care regimen, knowledge about ingredients and someone to lend an ear was a breath of fresh air.

Oh boy could I relate. I’ve been told that ones passion should consist of doing something that you’d do even if you didn’t get paid for it. I think I’ve found a new passion! I love talking to women about their skin care challenges. Do I know everything? No, not at all. However I do know where to find the answers to questions I don’t have.

Have You Found Your Passion?

Finding your passion might take you on a similar route as mine. And then again, your experience could be totally different. The key is to find a thing that will make you happy. Some of you might find it in a job, others will find it in being your own boss. It’s ok, if you’re one of those people that’s unemployable. Know that and keep it moving.

Finding your passion is like falling in love. You’ll always want it in your life. Take inventory of the things you love to do. Which of these things will make you money and have you wanting to do it 24 hours a day? Yes, it’s a very good idea if your passion can also earn your a living.

That’s it for this week. As always …
