The Octonauts
Explore, rescue, protect! My preschooler is in love with the Octonauts! If you’ve never seen the show, you can check it out on Disney Junior. It’s about a crew of brave, warmhearted animals whose mission is to explore the sea, rescue any sea creature in need, and protect the aquatic environment in which all sea creatures live. They live in and work out of the Octopod, an octopus shaped, underwater mission control sort of place.
The Crew of the Octopod consists of three main characters, assisted by others as the topic allows. The three main characters are Captain Barnacles, Kwazii Kitten, and Peso Penguin.
Captain Barnacles is the bear in charge of all of the octonauts. He is wise and brave, and always ready to go rescue an animal in need. Kwazii Kitten is a pirate-y sort of fellow who’s always ready for adventure and not afraid of anything. It’s not exactly clear what his official role is, as he’s pretty much able to step in and do whatever is needed. He loves traveling to new places and seeing new things. Peso Penguin is the team’s medic. He’s good at helping injured sea animals, and although he can be easily scared sometimes, he’s able to rise to the occasion for an animal in trouble.
It’s easy to see why my little boy is so enamored with the Octonauts. There’s adventure, and missions, and that cute “Creature Report!” song at the end of every episode. That’s where they recap all that we’ve learned about the sea creature we met on the show, including it’s habitat and habits. They also show an actual picture of the animal in its native environment, rather than a cartoon drawing, and sometimes show an example of it doing whatever it does- squirting ink, blowing up to triple it’s size, etc. It’s a great way to introduce kids to animals they wouldn’t normally see, even in aquariums.
If you haven’t checked out the Octonauts, you should. It’s a cute show that will keep you and your little ones entertained, and give you lots to talk about. Pretty soon, you’ll see your little one on all sorts of missions to the deep blue sea, and you can marvel at what they have learned when they come and give you their own, personal Creature Report!
