Have a Film Noir Party

Guest Author - Vannie

Have you ever thought of holding a film noir party with music, food and friends who love noir? For your party choose a single feature (one movie). You will need some time to discuss the movie and enjoy the mood of the evening. Serve appetizers and soft drinks or pitcher of one of the many cocktails from the 30's or 40's before you move into the movie part of the party.

Start the evening and end the evening with appropriate music. I suggest one or both of Rod Stewart's "The Great American Songbook" CD's, The Great American Songbook and The Great American Songbook II. Stewart's smoky voice lends itself splendidly to the dark and sometimes sultry tones of noir.

I recommend any of the following movies. Some are noir, several are simply black and white "B" movies, but the texture and feel of the movie moves it into the 'film noir' category:

  • The Second Woman. This movie is not widely-known, however noir some buffs may recognize it.

  • The movieLaura is perfect for watching, disecting and discussing. There are so many layers to this movie, you are bound to have much to talk about.

  • A Marilyn Monroe movie may seem an unlikely recomendation. Monroe proves her acting ability in Niagra. This 1951 movie is in color so viewers get a chance to see Monroe at her best and Niagra Falls up close and powerful.

  • Either one of these movies would make excellent viewing and discussion Rebecca or Gaslight. A lot of people have said that they think Joseph Cotton was the wrong choice to play the relentless detective in this movie. Watch Gaslight, see if you agree.

If you are introducing friends to noir, choose a title and actor that is familiar to them, perhaps Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca. Then sit back and enjoy. Who knows, your film noir parties could become seasonal events. For more film ideas take a look at Noir and B Movies to Complete Your Film Collection to your right.
