How to Dress Appropriately During the Summer
Summer season is here. Summer fun and staying cool are at the top of our list during the summer months. Unfortunately, while offices often relax summer attire, keep in mind that it is still a place of business requiring some sense of professionalism. This is especially important if your line of work requires you to deal with customers. Their impression of the organization is extremely important.
Hair
Summer vacations often lead to less than professional hair styles. Don’t be tempted to wear your hair in an extreme hairstyle. One worker in a payroll company took a trip to the Bahamas during her summer vacation. When she returned to work, her long blond hair was braided island style. Not only were her peers unable to focus on anything but her hair style, it also became the focus of conversation amongst clientele visiting the company.
Clothing
Many offices are allowing employees to dress in business casual attire during the work week. Some companies even allow casual Friday, allowing employees to come to work dressed in jeans, shorts or other casual clothing. Keep in mind that beach attire or revealing clothing is not appropriate in the office. This includes allowing bikini tops to be visible under the collar or bikini bottoms to peak from under low-cut pants. Unprofessional attire distracts both co-workers and customers. The office is not the place to “bring sexy back.”
Tank-tops are not the most professional attire, but they can be dressed up under a suit jacket or sweater. Keep in mind that men’s undergarment tank tops are never acceptable.
Socks, stockings or bare it?
Times have changed dramatically when woman were required to wear stockings and guys were required to wear socks regardless of the weather. It is not uncommon for women to go totally without stockings year-round. Let the situation dictate the attire. If you are going to an ultra-professional meeting, make sure you are professional from head to toe, including hosiery.
Shoes
Summer is an excellent time to show off pretty, polished toenails at the beach. Naturally, you will want to show off the toes at work as well. Consider safety and professionalism in equal parts when it comes time to decide on footwear. Flip-flops are not office attire. They can also be potentially dangerous. Make sure that any open-toed shoes are suitable for the office place.
Summer time is the perfect time to relax and enjoy the weather. Despite the heat, however, it’s important to realize that the business of business must continue. If you are new to the office, or have not experienced the summer season, check with your employer on the proper office attire.
