My Bride is a Mermaid
My Bride is a Mermaid is an anime series based on a manga series by Tahiko Kimura.
The main character of the series is a teenage boy named Nagasumi Michishio. At the beginning of the series, Nagasumi is on his summer vacation; he has been taken to his grandmother's house at Seto Bay. When Nagasumi tries to go swimming in the bay, he almost drowns; however, he is rescued by a mermaid. Unfortunately, mermaid law says that either the mermaid whose identity was revealed or the human who saw the mermaid must be executed.
The mermaid who saved Nagasumi is Sun Seto, the daughter of the head of a mermaid mafia group. Sun's mother lets Nagasumi in on a little secret; both his and Sun's lives can be saved if he agrees to take Sun for his bride. At the end of the first episode, Nagasumi decides to ask for Sun's hand in marriage, and this does not go over well with her yakuza father. Over the course of the series, Sun's father makes constant attempts on Nagasumi's life.
My Bride is a Mermaid is definitely a light comedy, and is some good and mindless fun. Even though the show utilizes the "cute" look for the animation, especially for the character of Sun, the English dub isn't being aimed at a young audience. In the dialogue of the English dub, there is some swearing; you especially hear the swear words from Sun's father. The animation also relies a lot on the "stereotypical" gags that are seen in anime comedies, such as characters turning completely white when they're in shock, the use of "sound effect" Japanese characters on the screen, exaggeration in the facial expressions on the characters to add to the comedy, and characters being tossed into the air in a comical manner.
Personally, I would recommend My Bride is a Mermaid to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
