Goldfish Snacks Losing Transfatty Acids
Pepperidge Farm is reformulating its goldfish crackers to have NO transfatty acids - all due to consumer request! This is a great example of individual people being able to change how a company creates its foods.
The new crackers will be flatter rather than fluffy, but will still have the cute goldfish shape. The flavors for these crackers will be cheddar jack, four cheese and cheesy sour cream and onion.
The entire line will be converted by September 2004. Pepperidge Farm has also pledged to remove all trans fatty acids from their bread line as well.
While some fats - such as Omega oils - are found to be CRITICAL to healthy living, trans fatty acids are known to be very bad for you. They clog your arteries and cause serious health problems. In the past, packaging would not necessarily tell you what the fat breakdown of a food product was, but the FDA is pushing to have this change in the future. In the meantime, many manufacturers who used TFAs are being pressured by consumers to change their product formulation.
