Red Garden
Red Garden is an anime produced by Gonzo and directed by Kou Matsuo.
The main characters are four girls who attend a private institution set on Roosevelt Island, New York City: Kate, Rachel, Rose, and Claire. Kate is from an affluent family, and is a member of an elite group at the school called "Grace." Rachel fits into the "popular girl" stereotype and is the most mentally unstable of the four girls. Rose is a shy girl who is going to the school through an academic scholarship. Claire is the most independent and aggressive of the girls.
At the beginning of the first episode, all four of these girls get up in the morning and feel uneasy and restless; also, none of them can recall anything about the previous night. Their anxiety grows when their school announces that their classmate and friend, Lisa, was found dead.
The following night, the four girls see butterflies and are drawn to the same location. Once they are all gathered, a woman named Lula and her partner JC approach and tell them that all four of the girls are already dead. Also, the girls are told that they must work for Lula and JC if they don't want to disappear completely.
The girls are reanimated on new, special bodies, and Lula claims that their real bodies are in her custody. Lula also claims she can eventually return the girls to their previous lives once their job is done. Their "job" is to kill "monsters" in the dead of night, and the "monsters" almost look like regular people. If they fail, then the girls will die for real.
Personally, I thought the storyline for this series was a little on the strange side; however, the animation is rather decent. If you have an appreciation for mystery and supernatural horror, then you might have an appreciation for Red Garden.
However, with the focus of the series, as well as with some of the visuals included, Red Garden is not intended for younger viewers. Personally, I would recommend Red Garden to anime viewers who are 16 or 17 years of age and older.
