Self induced abortions
A self-induced abortion (or self-induced miscarriage) is an abortion, performed by the pregnant woman herself without the aid of a doctor or medical professional. It is illegal, even in states or countries where abortion is legal, but more often than not, the woman performing her own abortion either cannot afford one, or doesn't have nearby access to a place that can perform one legally.
There are various methods of self induced abortion, some carrying more risks than others, but none are without risk.
Every day, in underdeveloped countries, nearly 400 women die from unsafe self induced abortions. In the United States there are several deaths and many more hospitalized each year from attempted home abortions. It is also common to see many women each year who remain pregnant after attempting to cause an abortion. Some of those women will give birth to babies with serious birth defects as a result of their abortion attempts.
Most people are aware of the most common form of self induced abortions from back in the 50's and 60's when women used coat hangers to end their pregnancy.
Unfortunately with the necessity for an abortion that some unplanned pregnancies bring, and the lack of availability for a safe one, women have come up with other and equally dangerous methods.
Without going into extreme detail, I will be giving some examples here. I stress that this is not a how to guide, but rather an eye opening look at the direction our country and already many other countries are going.
In Africa women have been know to use a carved abortion stick made of wood which is handed down to the other women in the family.
Piercing of the fetus with a knitting needle or similar tool inserted into the uterus through the cervix.
Abdominal massage.
Ingesting abortifacients.
Douching with harmful and even poisonous substances.
Suction applied through the insertion of a rubber tube into the uterus via the cervix.
Extreme physical exertion and or self induced punches, kicks, or falls.
These are just to name a few. As Congress continues to pass more laws limiting abortions and closing more and more clinics, the rise of self induced abortions will only get worse.
We must keep abortion legal, remain pro choice and keep women alive.
