Shining Tears X Wind

Shining Tears X Wind
Shining Tears X Wind is an anime based on the PlayStation 2 games Shining Tears and Shining Wind. However, the series tends to focus more on the story presented in Shining Wind, and is seen through the perspective of the main male protagonist.

At the beginning of the series, it's mentioned that people have been mysteriously disappearing. A student disappears from St. Luminous College, and a group of students gather together to try to figure out what happened. Mao, a catgirl being from another world, comes into our world to look for her friend Zero. She comes across two of the students trying to solve the student's disappearance (Souma Akizuki and Touka Kureha) as they encounter a werewolf-like monster.

Mao teams up with Souma, and they are able to subdue the monster. However, the monster is able to loosen himself from the ropes binding him, and he smashes a mirror that Mao has. Smashing the mirror causes the monster, Mao, Souma, and Touka to be transported to End Earth, which is the alternate world that Mao comes from.

When Souma and Touka come to, they are no longer with Mao or the monster; instead, they come face to face with Zero. Zero tells Souma that he's been watching him, and now he is entrusting Souma to watch over the world in his stead.

As Souma and Touka begin to travel through End Earth, they are attacked by a group of troll-like beings. After thinking that Touka had died, Souma was able to pull a legendary sword from Touka's body; this turns out to be a "Soul Blade." The story follows their adventures as they travel through End Earth.

Shining Tears X Wind is a rather odd story, although in the long run, I don't think it's quite as odd as Final Fantasy Unlimited. The animation in the series is rather decent, although there was a brief bit of fanservice in the first episode. Outside of the bit of fanservice, there wasn't much to object to in the visuals. However, with the subject matter and the bit of fanservice that's in the series, I wouldn't recommend it to younger viewers. Personally, I would recommend Shining Tears X Wind to anime viewers who are 14 or 15 years of age and older.
