Book Review- Bead Tube Jewelry
Nancy Zellers' new book, Bead Tube Jewelry is a collection of projects using little tubes of peyote stitching that are zipped up the edge to create a small tube.
The technique is not new, it's a favorite project for teaching people flat peyote, or for trying out color combinations. What this book does very well is show a lot of ways to use these fast little beaded beads to make jewelry.
It starts with the basics, how to make a bead tube, the tools you'll need for the jewelry and seed bead techniques, including 5 different turnarounds for odd count peyote and how to follow bead charts. All very well explained and illustrated.
The projects are a great mix, because of the versatility of the shape and the wide availability of colors in Delica beads, it's possible to achieve a wide range of effects and styles. The Dragon's Treasure set is elegant and lush with an architectural feel, the Delhi Delight is a colorful lariat that would look wonderful with soft summer dresses. The Bead Tube Soup bracelet shown on the cover would make a fantastic seed bead sampler.
What I like best about this book is that bead tubes can be made one at a time in your own time. Because they work up quickly and are fairly portable, you can make a few a day in between other beading. Then put them together into a project when you have enough made. This book has a lot of good ideas for ways to use them that are fairly simple. It's a great book for people who want to start with seed beads in an easy comfortable way who are more used to stringing than bead weaving. For me, it's a worthwhile book to have for the quick ideas and the patterns for making bead tubes.
