Playstation 2 Top Selling Gaming System
Despite many attempts by the GameCube and XBox to cut their prices, the Playstation2 remains the top gaming system in the world.
All three systems have been out for about 2 years at this point, and the big surprise is that the XBox (around $199) has sold the same amount of units as the GameCube (around $99). Both have sold around 10 million units. In comparison, the Playstation 2 has sold around 60 million units.
A big difference is that the XBox is new and that the GameCube uses a brand new game item - the mini-CD. But the Playstation 2 uses the same standard CD/DVD size that the original Playstation did - meaning those who bought the Playstation 2 had instant access to all existing games for the Playstation. They could also use their PS2 as a CD and DVD player, meaning fewer electronic devices hooked up to the TV and stereo system.
Where the consoles are, the game makers follow. Most game makers now concentrate on making new games for the Playstation 2, and then follow up with the other two systems. While it used to be thought that young kids bought most console systems, in current markets it is usually people in the 20 years and up range that are playing and enjoying the games. A large majority of adults enjoy computer and console gaming as a way to relax. So while games geared at the kiddies do well on holidays, for day to day gaming it's the adults who are buying the systems
If you're looking for a system that has a huge number of games available, and more coming out every week, the playstation 2 is the one to get!
