Out of Time (2003) Denzel Washington

I don't recall any fanfare or seeing big promotions for the film Out of Time when it was released a few years back. However it is well worth renting, or if you already have at home, pop it in the DVD player and watch it again.
Out of Time> stars Academy Award winner Denzel Washington is Matt Lee Whitlock, a small town police chief in the Florida Keys, faced with a double homicide and all of the evidence is pointing to him. Whitlock must prove himself innocent, however, that is hard to do when it is learned that he was romantically involved with one of the victims. To make matters worse he is accused of sexual misconduct and embezzling money. It is hard to deny sexual misconduct, but he continues to deny stealing money. When Whitlock finds himself seemingly boxed into a corner; he goes on the run to find out who killed the victims in this double homicide. The one person he is sure is innocent is himself, but time is running out in his search for the guilty, as his own police officers hunt for him.
This is probably not one of Denzel Washington's best movies but it is good one, despite some loose ends. Fortunately, the loose ends do not take away from the story line and Washington is perfection as he runs and sweats, and tries to find a way out of a mess he walked into with open eyes.
If there is an Out of Time 2 in the future let us hope for a tighter plot. If you want to see Denzel Washington at his best while chasing the bad guys see him in Devil in a Blue Dress as private investigator Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins.
In addition to Washington, the movie also stars Sanaa Lathan and Dean Cain. Actress Eva Mendes is his estranged wife who is also a police detective. Mendes was also in Training Day (2001) with Denzel Washington.
I found this movie to be very reminiscent of the 1981 movie Body Heat in many ways, however to discuss them here will give too much of the movie away. Am I giving anything the away by saying this? Absolutely not. Out of Time is also like Body Heat in that it very easily slips into the 'noir' category.
I thoroughly enjoyed Out of Time. Even its shortcomings it is still a good film. It is in my film collection.
Rated PG-13
