November 15th has taken on a new meaning in Australia: it is now "Steve Irwin Day." Intended to celebrate the life of the famous Crocodile Hunter, it is also a day to remember and recognize his many contributions to wildlife conservation, research, and awareness.
Almost everyone knows who Steve Irwin is. Best known, especially in the US, for his Animal Planet television show, The Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin was a man that won the hearts of many adults and children alike. He was always very real, sharing his life and passions with the world, and through his enthusiasm, taught many to love the wild creatures of this world as much as he did. His tragic death on September 4, 2006, shocked the world.
There was an outpouring of grief and memorial services over his loss. You might wonder how so many could mourn a man they had never met in real life - but his adventures on his show, co-hosted by his wife Terrie, were not staged or merely a script. He was very real, very honest, and many came to admire him, even to feel as if they knew him personally.
Certainly if you plan to be in Australia (or live there), this is an unforgettable day to visit the Australia Zoo (located in Berwah, Queensland), and is currently planned to be an annual event. Activities at the zoo will focus on what Steve loved best: family and wildlife. During the first annual Steve Irwin Day, over 6000 people came to the zoo, dressed in khakis, to honor and remember the Crocodile Hunter.
But in remembering the man, it's important to remember the causes for which he stood - and that in many ways is the true strength and power of Steve Irwin Day: to support the conservation of wildlife and wild places he fought so hard to preserve. Take this opportunity to volunteer in your local community at a park, preserve, or conservation land. Donate to a worthy cause, like Wildlife Warriors Worldwide (the non-profit organization started by Steve Irwin) or the Wildlife Foundation. Support your local zoo, especially in research to help endangered animals.
Don't mourn for Steve Irwin; celebrate him. And take the opportunity to help keep his legacy alive.
