To bang or not to bang

Guest Author - Jason P. Ruel

Bangs are always a contemptuous topic. People like them and hate them. They love them and loathe them. They come in all shapes, sizes, density, and direction. People want them, and then want them to leave. Bangs are in-style one day and out of style the next. The real question is, do you want to get banged or not?

The first thing to consider when you make your decision is do you want to commit to the bangs? You do realize they will be hanging there and that you MUST do something with them. You can’t just leave them hanging there and hope they take care of themselves. You have to be willing to commit to washing them, drying them, styling them with some form of tool, and using product. If not, then bangs probably are not for you.

The next to consider when you have finally decided to get your bangs is how thick you want to make them. This means how dense are you wanting your bangs to be? Do you want thick heavy bangs? DO you want a “normal” level of bangs? Or, do you want to have wispy bangs that just look like you really did nothing with them but in reality are the hardest to get to look carefree.

After you have considered how dense you want your bangs, you need to make up your mind on the direction they will go. Do you want a blunt hanging right above the eye bang or do you want a more contemporary side-sweep bang? Do you want them to lift off the face or hang on and camouflage the forehead?

Considering the direction is one problem, the next is whether or not it will go with your facial shape. Do you have a long forehead? DO you have a short forehead? Do you have a wide forehead or a narrow one? Is your facial shape square or round? Is it pear-shaped or heart? Do you have a narrow jaw or wide one? All these things need to be taken into consideration. Why? You have to consider the shape of the bang in relation to your facial features. You don’t want to have wide square-ish blunt bangs when you have a square face and a wider square jaw. You don’t want to have side part bangs that sweep deeply to one side of your forehead when you have a long narrow forehead. These considerations are important because you are going to be wearing these bangs for some time. It is easy to take hair off, but not put it back on unless you want to consider hair extensions or a new short pixie hairstyle.

After shape, density, and direction, the final thing you need to consider is how they will be cut and styled. Are you going to get them blunt cut with shears so that there is no variation on the edges and have a strong line? Or, are you going to get the point-cut or razor cut so that the ends of the hair are staggered and not a perfectly straight line which allows for some weight and movement to the bang? DO you have a curling iron, hot rollers, or a flatiron to style them? What about hairspray or volumizing crèmes, mousse, or spray? Remember, they are a commitment and to just let them hang there is a shame since you took all this time to decide on what you wanted.

To bang, or not to bang, that is the question you have to consider. Are you willing to commit to keeping them up, choosing a direction, density, how they are cut, and their shape? If you can answer in the positive to all these considerations, maybe bangs are for you!
