Amstel Light Low Carb Beer

Amstel Light Low Carb Beer
While wine is great for a low carb diet, beer is usually off limits because of its high carb counts. Amstel Light gives you a tasty alternative.

Amstel Light Low Carb Beer One of my favorite book characters, Spenser from the Spenser for Hire series, was drinking Amstel Lights back in the early 70s. Over the years it has been known as a diet beer, but for low carb enthusiasts, the selling point is the 5.0g carbs per bottle. The maker has maintained this carb level for quite some time, so the formula / recipe is a consistent one.

While this isn't a designer beer or rich, flavorful porter, it is a reasonably good beer for hanging out and having fun with friends. It has a light flavor, but not nearly as light / ginger-aley as the super light Bud 55 style beers. There's a weight here that is definitely more beer-like.

I spent my young adult years drinking Heineken, so I like this flavor profile in general. They are very similar. It has a good mouth feel and good bubbles without being like drinking soda.

The dark bottle also helps prevent skunking, which is critical with light beers. A clear bottle can skunk in under 15 minutes when exposed to light. So you have more chance of having a non-skunked beer with this vs with many other light beer alternatives.

Remember that your alcohol tolerance drops when you're on a low carb diet, so be sure to drink lots of water while you have alcohol and space your drinks accordingly.

There are of course several other low carb beer options out there, many with carb counts of 2g or even lower. But we've found that as you go "down" from Amstel Light you lose a lot of flavor and get a more watery feeling. So for us, the best tradeoff is just one or two Amstel Lights and lots of great, low carb food to go with it!
