The First Day of the Rest of Your Life

The First Day of the Rest of Your Life
Today is the first day of the rest of your life. What will you do with it?

We never know the day or hour that we will breathe our last breath. We do know that we have now and that each morning is an opportunity to start anew. So, what’s on your agenda? Is it exciting? Is it emotional? Is it a part of your passion? Will it change the world? Is it progressive? Will it change the course of your life?

Will you adapt a new diet? A healthier diet means different things for different people. Maybe you will become a vegetarian, or a raw foodie. Maybe you will add meat to your diet or remove carbs. Maybe you will juice more often and eat less. Whatever the case, make certain to do your homework and have your doctor check your blood work now and 30 days after you start your new diet. This simple action will let you know if you are doing something truly healthy for you or not.

Will you adopt new rituals? Maybe you are planning to fast regularly or exercise daily. Maybe you will meditate weekly or go out for drinks with friends monthly. Find a ritual that allows you to take care of you in a manner that is personally nurturing and balancing.

Will you create new traditions? Maybe you and your immediate family will go out for breakfast once a month or take a mini-vacation every quarter. Try taking each of your children out for a date alone with you once each month. Traditions are memorable and create a sense of togetherness and bonding. Make certain that everyone involved has a responsibility, which makes them feel involved. Also, when possible, instill a moment that reminds each family member that they are special.

Will you make a career change? No matter the age getting into a career you have always wanted is exciting. I was recently introduced to a woman that started her latest career at 50 and retired fifteen years later (last month). She was thrilled to have had the experience. She felt accomplished for having taken on the task. Finally, she expressed gratitude and delight for the fifteen years of joy she experienced of being in the field of her choice and being appreciated by clients regularly. Remember, you are never too old to change the course of your life.

Will you find a religion to help direct you? Religion is a way of life. It is full of ideals and guidelines that can define a path to spiritual awareness. Many people need that network as a support system. Others need religion to stay on point and to support others. If religion is what you need, now may be the time to find a church home.

Will you forgive someone? Forgiving yourself allows you to love yourself. Forgiving others provides you with freedom and creates more love within so that there is more love to give. Forgiveness is a kind act toward you. It releases stress and emotional bondage allowing the rest of your life to feel relieved.

Will you attend to your bucket list? Your bucket list is a list of things you are planning to do before you die. When is the last time you took a look at that list and tackled any of the contents? Now could be that time. Maybe accomplishing one of your bucket list goals will increase your energy, boost your confidence, and get your creative juices flowing.

Since today is the first day of the rest of your life, you have a clean slate and anything amazing is possible. Today, tomorrow, or the next day are all new days and fresh starts. Be a participant and make something wonderfully exciting happen.
