Car Dreams

A car is a vehicle that we use to get us from place to place. It makes life easier, helps us to get places that we may not otherwise be able to get to if we had to walk. Cars are an expression of freedom and independence.

In the dream world, cars most often represent the physical body; which metaphorically speaking, also give us a means of freedom and expression. They represent the path we are traveling, and the ease or difficulty, we may be having during our travels.

Car crash
Car crash dreams seem to be the most common type of car dream, and generally symbolize the personal life being a “wreck.” If you dream of a car accident, ask yourself if there is something in your life that you feel needs attention; relationships or the work environment may be out of harmony.

Are you the driver or the passenger?
If you are the driver, this is good because you want to be driving your own life. If someone you know is driving, it’s important to ask yourself how you feel about that person. It may be that you need support or guidance. In real life, does this person support you, or do you think that they have too much control. If the person driving is the opposite sex, they may represent the anima/animus, or higher self, seeking to have more of a presence in your life. If your child is driving, it could represent how you are dealing with their growing independence.

Is the car acting up?
Is something wrong with your car? Are the brakes failing? It may mean that in real life you feel you are moving too fast; you may want to slow down, but feel you can’t. Did you run out of gas? It may mean that you are not getting what you need to move forward. Is the battery dead? That could mean you are using more energy than you are receiving, and approaching burn-out. Maybe it’s storming, and your windshield wipers aren’t working? That may mean that you aren’t seeing something clearly.

What kind of car are you driving?
Are you driving a car from your past? That may mean that something from that time in your life needs to be examined. Are you driving a beat up old clunker? In waking life you may not be living up to your potential. Are you driving someone else’s car? This dream may be telling you that you are living your life according to someone else’s expectation.

Where are you driving?
If you are driving in strange surroundings, and feel worried, it may mean that in real life you have moved into uncomfortable territory. But if you feel a sense of adventure, this could mean you are moving forward into a real life adventure.

What color is the car?
Color can be a very powerful dream symbol. A red car may represent anger or passion. A white car, enlightenment. A yellow car, self esteem. A blue car, communication.

Car dreams represent the way we move through life. The ease and joy we experience in the dream are directly related to the ease and joy we feel in real life.
