Tween Books

Tween books are for young readers between ages eight and twelve-years-old. They are for children beginning to read complex chapter books. The characters in the books are usually in the grades five through seven. This reflects the grade levels of the readers. As a person would expect, the tween book becomes more difficult the higher the grade.

Tween books are commonly called middle-reader books. The books present new vocabulary words and a higher reading level. Children who read more, read at higher levels. The entry level tween books may still have illustrations. Yet, there are only a few per chapter. The book's chapters are short. Tween books have less than two hundred pages.

Authors use a variety of subject matter for tween books. Choose books that reflect the readers' interests. There is adventure, mystery, fantasy, or whatever appeals to them. Also, there are books for each season and holiday of the year. The sport books cover a variety of interests. Zibby Payne always has time for soccer in her adventure books.

Encourage tweens to begin reading a tween series. Series compels young readers to seek out more books. Mary Pope Osborne has a very popular series, The Magic Tree House. Elizabeth Levy has a series about gymnasts, The Gymnasts. For girls who like horseback riding, there are The Saddle Club series. Sharon M. Draper has a series for African-American boys. It is the Black Dinosaur Club Mystery series. There are tween series for every taste to encourage children to read.
