A STEP in Reading – Step 2, Grades 1-3
Balto is the lead dog of his sled team. In the worst storm ever he is the only hope for the sick children miles away in Nome, Alaska. It is a terrible storm, the worst in years- it’s been snowing for day and is 30 degrees below zero!
Will Balto be able to find his way to take the medicine to the sick children?
In 1925, Nome, Alaska is a frontier town. Balto lived in Nome, and most of the year the town was buried in snow, so the only way to travel was by dog sled.
Some children in Nome were very sick with diphtheria and needed medicine or they would die. The doctor needed the medicine FAST!
Luckily, a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska had the medicine. But Anchorage is 800 miles away! The doctors put the medicine on the train. Bad luck - the train gets stuck in the snow.
The unbelievable story of how Balto saves the children.
