Money Myths Become Negative Money Habits

Money myths are those “truisms” we grew up hearing and that have become part of our financial belief system. These ingrained myths have helped to form how we live our money lives. Money myths have the unconscious power to limit financial self-esteem and become major speed bumps along the road to greater self-sufficiency and financial freedom.

Many of the money myths we’ve grown up believing have now become unconscious everyday adult habits. Habits can be positive or negative, empowering or disempowering. The good news, you can change negative money habits.

Money Myth #2You can’t be a good person and wealthy too.

Let me ask you a question: Growing up, did parents and other role models say negative things about people who had money? If you answered “yes,” your negativity surrounding making money may be more unconsciously powerful than you realize.

I’ve found that childhood seems to be a fertile field for sprouting seeds of financial stress and negativity.

Parents don’t consciously try to sow seeds of negativity; they’re only doing and saying what they grew up witnessing and hearing. It’s like we have generations of negative and positive thoughts, traits and beliefs about money locked in our DNA.

Here’s the really good news! The beliefs your parents and significant role models have/had about money and wealth, if they were negative, no longer have to remain your beliefs. As an adult you have the choice to create your own beliefs and habits about wealth.

Here’s a truth: The mind is so powerful it will not act against your most dominant thoughts, values and beliefs – even if those thoughts, values and beliefs are making you unhappy or broke. Basically, your mind is giving you exactly what you’re telling it you want.

Consider this, what if a voice inside your head unconsciously kept telling you:
~ You can’t be rich and honest too
~ Rich people aren’t happy people.
Would you excitedly be striving for wealth?

Do any of these phrases sound familiar? Could there be sentences like these negative ones sprouting in your unconscious mind?

Here’s my suggestion: If your parents are still alive, become aware of how they talk about money and especially what they say about wealthy people. Are their comments positive or negative? If your parents aren’t alive, think back to childhood discussions and make a list of what you heard about wealthy people, luxury and being a millionaire.

Also, make some time to think of all the wealthy people who are using their wealth for good. There are two links at the bottom of this page to stories on the Abundance and Wealth site about “Wealthy Women.” Becoming more conscious of how wealth can change lives for the positive will help dispel some of those money myths.

You’ll only allow yourself to become abundant and wealthy if consciously and unconsciously you believe that abundance and wealth are positives in your life. Awareness gives you the power to change.
