Update on Iceland Tourism

Iceland is rebounding after the catastrophic Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption that rocked the country back in April 2010.

Initially, it appeared that the press coverage of Iceland was doom and gloom. Farmers were forces to sell or slaughter livestock, tourists were cancelling vacation plans, and neighboring countries feared a backlash from drifting smoke and ash. However, there have been positive results of the volcanic eruption, as well.

Crops, especially corn and grass, are growing faster and thicker as a result of the inch-plus layer of ash that is heating the soil. Farmers will simply have to rinse the ash from the product after harvest.

Festivals are returning to Iceland, as well. Iceland Airwaves, a music concert featuring artists from around the world takes place from October 13-17. Iceland Air is offering promotional deals starting at $556, including air from select US cities and two nights’ accommodations. For more info go to www.icelandair.us/offers-and-bookings/book-packages/package/item246735/Iceland_Airwaves_2010/

August 5-8 marks Reykjavik’s second annual Gay Pride festival and Parade. Last year’s event was so popular that over 80,000 people came out to enjoy the festivities. This year the event promises to be even bigger. For more info, see www.gaypride.is/Index/English/News/Seemore/171

Travel bargains are spring up all over the place to get tourists to visit the country. If you are a fan of the television show “The Bachelorette”, you know that Ali took her men on a driving trip through Iceland. Now, you, too can enjoy the same (well, almost) experience with Iceland air’s “Travel Like A Bachelorette” package. The tour includes 4 night’s accommodation, air from select North American cities, breakfast daily, a lobster dinner and use of a rental car. For more info on that tour, see www.icelandair.ca/offers-and-bookings/book-packages/package/item444017/Travel_Like_a_Bachelorette/

Looking for a rejuvenating getaway in Iceland? Located less than an hour drive from Reykjavik, The Blue Lagoon Clinic has won numerous awards for its environmental practices. Here, guests can enjoy healing and relaxing in warm geothermal seawater in the lagoon. Book a special massage or skin treatment. Enjoy a snack or beverage at the swim-up bar in the lagoon. You may wish to have a gourmet dinner at the Lava Restaurant before checking in to your clean and relaxing room at the Clinic.

With so many deals and so much to do, consider making Iceland your getaway for 2010.
