Prom Girl

Since 1998, Prom Girl has been growing into an online community for young women looking for the dream prom, homecoming, formal or special occasion dress. Their head office is located in New York City, "in the heart of the fashion district".

Selection: Prom Girl has a plus size section divided into six dress categories for easy browsing -- View All, Dresses with Sleeves, Sexy Dresses, Cocktail Dresses, and Ball Gowns. At the time of this write up they had over 400 gowns/dresses listed in their plus size section many of which do not fall into the traditional prom gown category. A number of dresses I recognized from Kiyonna, Igigi and Sydney's Closet. Most of their traditional looking dresses seem to come from Aurora in Florida which unlike the last three just mentioned doesn't have it's own online store. There are designers like Flip, Tiffany, Studio 17 and too many more to mention in this small space. For the lower end plus size range, 16 and under, there are even more options to choose from.

Sizing: They haves sizes 1 - 32 but not all plus size dresses come in all sizes. Some only go up to 24. If you are size 28 plus they have a tab option that allows you to see dresses in those sizes instead of searching through their complete plus line.

Styling: Everywhere I look it seems that prom dresses are sleeveless but there are a few with covered arms. Most are form fitting from the waist (or lower waist) up. There is life beyond the empire waist! The colors range from bright to mute tones. There is everything from traditional taffeta, to flamenco ruffles, to layered chiffon. They also have an amazing Cinderella shoe department with over 200 styles to choose from, many dyable.

Pricing: Prom styles dresses range in price from $178 - $278. Cocktail run from $63 - $174. And of course there are more expensive if needed, wanted or just have to have.

Availability: They ship to the US and Canada as well as try to accommodate other countries. Basic U.S. shipping starts at $8.75 and Canadian shipping starts at $20.

Overall Impression: At first look, it appears to be another skinny girl website but they do have plus size models and their plus size tab is dead on eye level easy to find. Some of their dresses are inspired by celebrity style like a version of Sara Ramirez's 2007 Golden Globe Dress (FA-9140). They have some incredibly beautiful dresses that are, as a whole, reasonably priced for special occasions (except for the crazy-priced $800 dress I found).

Using the shopping cart is a no brainer. If you go there with a mission of buying a dress and shoes you can do so easily. I would like to see a search feature for different sizes. So if a woman is a size 16, 18 or whatever, she can search for that size and find all the dresses available to her. The tips section was lacking with many incomplete sections but the categories on etiquette, costs, fun tips and preparation were quick and informative. If a prom dress is what you need then this website is definitely worth your time.
