Have you ever wondered why Friday the thirteenth is considered and unlucky day? I certainly have. Did bad things happen on this day? Is it just the number thirteen that is unlucky? Are Fridays unlucky?
Why isn't Saturday the fourteenth unlucky or Thursday the twelfth?
There are thirteen items in a baker's dozen, wouldn't you rather have thirteen items as opposed to twelve items? There are eight hours in a work day. How come eight isn't unlucky? Well, I did some research and this is what I came up with:
Unlucky 13
Apparently in Ancient Roman beliefs, witches used to gather in groups of twelve and if a thirteenth witch showed up, then it was supposedly the devil.
In Biblical references, the apostle whom betrayed Jesus, Judas, was the thirteenth guest at the Last Supper.
Jack the Ripper, Charles Manson, Jeffrey Dahmer, Theodore Bundy and Albert De Salvo all have thirteen letters in their names. And we cannot forget about the ill-fated mission of Apollo 13.
Twelve is considered a number of completeness by numerologists. Twelve months in a year, twelve signs of the zodiac and twelve apostles of Jesus. There are also twelve gods of Olympus, Hercules had twelve labors and we cannot forget about the twelve days of Christmas. Thereby adding a one to any of these, making them thirteen, would go beyond completeness and would be considered bad luck. But in that logic, wouldn't eleven be unlucky then as it would be just short of completeness?
Unlucky Friday
Eve reportedly tempted Adam with the apple on a Friday. The death of Jesus and the Great Flood both occurred on a Friday. King Solomon's temple burned to the ground on a Friday.
Black Friday has been given the name because of such events as the stock market crash, the first “official” day of Christmas holiday shopping and for other reasons of misfortune since the early 1800's.
It is said that the blue jay meets with the devil on this day to talk about us and our deeds.
Never start a trip on Friday or it will bring bad luck.
Do not change your bedding on Fridays or you will have bad dreams
Friday the Thirteenth
In 1306, on Friday the thirteenth, King Phillip of France arrested the Knights Templar and tortured them, marking the day as a day of evil.
In old British custom, Friday was the customary day for hangings of people sentenced to death and there were reportedly thirteen steps leading up to the gallows.
So with an unlucky day associated with an unlucky number, it makes for a doubly unlucky day.
The number thirteen is considered so unlucky, that many buildings do not have a thirteenth floor, many airports do not have a thirteenth gate and airplanes do not have a thirteenth row of seats.
In Italy, the number thirteenth is not in their national lottery and if you live in Florence and your house is between number twelve and number fourteen, then your address is twelve and a half.
How about you? Are you a triskaidekaphobe? Do you fear the number 13? Do you fear the day of Friday the Thirteenth?
