Weddings in Spain

Getting married in Spain is big business. Spain is the second largest exporter of Bridal wear in the world, and as such is a major trend-setter in wedding fashion.

With a high value placed on marriage and family, Spaniards like to spend on the big day, which not only binds two people, but two families together.

Wedding customs vary across Spain, some areas offer the bouquet to the Virgin, some to a best friend others throw the bridal bouquet to the crowd. It is also usual to throw rice, not confetti, over the bride and groom.

In Spanish weddings, grooms don’t normally have a best man but a best woman – his mother, who doesn’t deliver an after dinner speech. Here in the south where I live summer weddings usually take place around 7 or 8pm, after the oppressive heatof the day. After the rather speedy wedding ceremony it’s to the local restaurant for a set meal or buffet with plenty of wine, that flows on into the early hours until no guests are left.

Official Wedding photographers are usual, it's generally each guest with their camera and video, a free for all affair with everybody yelling directions at the same time – noisy chaos.

The many famous designers of Bridal gowns combined with the glorious weather Spain boasts, have influenced many foreigners to get married in Spain. For this reason many professional wedding companies are now available to help organise weddings for foreign couples.

Every year frilly and stylish dresses take part in dozens of wedding fairs throughout Spain. Barcelona’s Novia Espana, held every summer is the largest and most famous event with three days of catwalk shows, displaying thousands of glittering wedding gowns, shoes and accessories to more than 12,000 attendees.

Some of the more famous designers are:

Pronovia – they also feature Bridal miniskirts and trouser dresses.

Rosa Clara – 1930’s inspired with fitted bodies and floaty skirts.

Jesus Peiro - oriental inspirations made from silk, satin and lace.

Lorenz Caprile – designed the wedding gown for the daughter of King Juan Carlos, and favours crepe and organza.

Hannibal Laguna – likes asymmetrical lines, favoured by Victoria Beckham.

Javier Larrainzer – likes plunging necklines, spaghetti straps and strapless designs.

If you’re desire is to get married in Spain then it makes sense to buy your wedding dress here too.

If there’s any room on your guest list, can my camera and I come too?
