Children love kittens. Clare Turlay Newberry's April's Kittens picture book has many kittens.

April is a six-year-old girl. She lives with her parents in New York City. They live a "one cat" apartment. Sheba is April's cat.

One day, Sheba becomes a mother. Now there are four cats in the "one cat" apartment. April must give three kittens away. Which ones will she give away? And to whom?

April does not want to give any of the cats away. The thought of doing so makes April sad. Bravely, she interviews people to adopt a cat.

Children will empathize with April. They will feel April's pain. Don't worry the book ends happily.

Clare Turlay Newberry wrote the picture book was over fifty years ago. Pet care has greatly changed over the years. Today's parent should speak of spading and neutering pets. Pets are no longer fed milk and table food. The changes should be discussed with the child.

The picture book is best for children age 4 and older. They are able to understand the adoption process. The large, bold text is easy to read.
