Operation Doubles

If you're an intermediate or advanced player looking to improve your doubles game, then OperationDoubles.com is the place for you. The author and coach, Kathy Krajco, is a player, teaching pro and tennis coach.

To gain an advantage in the game of doubles, of course you need to have good volleys, but there is so much we can do with court positioning and knowing where to hit the ball. In the series of articles below, Kathy explains the basics of doubles formations and different variations on the game.

According to Kathy, "Operation Doubles is a system. It takes a holistic view of the game, focusing on teamwork, not individual up and back play. It puts you in command at whatever level you play and lets you be the strategist. Which is more than half the fun."

The Three Basic Doubles Formations
The three basic doubles formations are the Both-Up Formation, the Both-Back Formation, and the Up-and-Back Formation. Each corresponds to a strategy.

The Vulnerable Area in Each Formation
Every formation has a chink in its armor, an Achilles heel. In the Both-Back Formation, this vulnerable area is the wings. In the Up-and-Back Formation it's the Hole. In the Both-Up Formation it's the rear.

Closing the Hole : Offensive and Defensive Modes
Don't get caught in no-man's land and the hole caused by the up-and-back formation. Close the net for a winning strategy.
