How To Stop Avoiding Exercise

Do you catch yourself avoiding exercise often? Don’t feel bad we’ve all been there and it happens for a variety of reasons. Find out what’s behind your aversion to exercise and the simple workout tips that will help you stay on track without having to spend more time, money, or effort on exercise.

Reason for Avoiding Exercise #1: Your Workouts Are Mind-Numbingly Boring
Boring workouts are like boring t.v. shows that nobody watches and eventually get cancelled. The reality of exercise is that it must be exciting and engage your mind as well as your body. It’s a mistake to believe that an exercise habit will develop out of sheer repetition. It just won’t happen because once your mind check out the body does too. Workout Tips: Find workouts that are fun and exciting to you (not your spouse or the latest fitness guru) and expand from that. The more interesting something is to you the longer you’ll stick to it and the more you'll learn about what drives you to stay active.

Reason for Avoiding Exercise #2: Your Workouts Have No Purpose
Looking good and feeling good are o.k. reasons to exercise but they are simply not enough to keep most people going for long. A purpose driven exercise plan that focuses on boosting endurance for a marathon, improving core strength for surfing, or increases strength and energy levels so you can hang from the monkey bars with your kids is much more motivating because you're focused on long term goals that require specific actions. Looking good is a vague objective goal that's hard to plan around. Workout Tips: Find a purpose for working out other than just looking good and you’ll achieve a better looking body much faster and without thinking about it all the time. Need ideas? Check out what inspires people to workout.

Reason for Avoiding Exercise #3: Your Workouts Are Too Hardcore
As one of my favorite strength and conditioning coaches Mark Verstegen puts it "hard isn’t better, better is better". The thing about better is that it doesn’t automatically happen because you’re workouts are harder, longer, and overly complicated. Sure you need intensity to reach your fitness goals but the purpose of exercise isn’t to punish your body, it’s to make it better and that can only happen when you focus on working out smarter. Workout Tips: Find a workout plan that is not time consuming and that focus on improving your current fitness level with exercises that challenge your current fitness level. And don't forget to progress to more challenging workouts as you improve. This will keep you going for life.

Look forward to exercise and finally reach your fitness goals with How to Eat, Move and Be Healthy!
