Food Cravings

Strong desire for specific foods (the old pickles and ice cream syndrome) is believed to be related to increased hormonal production, particularly progesterone. These food cravings are fairly common and can often be indulged. If managed well, they are of small concern. The problem comes when you choose snacks high in fat, sugar, salt and calories that contribute to poor nutrition and excess weight gain.

Make it a habit to have available at all times healthy, nutritious snacks to satisfy your cravings. Unsweetened yogurt and fruit, nuts and seeds, apples and peanut butter are excellent choices. The desire for something sweet is often just an indication that your energy is low and needs a boost. Sweets do not make sense since they seldom really satisfy your hunger and have no nutritional value. You would be much better off with the sustained energy from a turkey or tuna sandwich on whole grain bread or a high quality protein drink.

Avoid coffee, colas, alcohol, cigarettes and recreational drugs. They can be very harmful as they interfere with the absorption of essential nutrients that are vitally important to both you and your baby.
