(Pleochroism means that iolite has different colours in different directions in the crystal-(from Greek pleion, "more," and chros, "colour"), in optics, the selective absorption in crystals of light vibrating in different planes. Pleochroism is the general term for both dichroism, which is found in uniaxial crystals (crystals with a single optic axis), and trichroism, found in biaxial crystals (two optic axes). It can be observed only in colored, doubly refracting crystals. However, the distinct cold grayish color of iolite differentiates it from tanzanite which exhibits a warmer blue with only a hint of violet. Iolite can be found in Sri Lanka, the U.S., Burma, India and Madagascar.
